I'M HERE TO EMPOWER YOU!

I’m an artist . . . but that’s not saying much, because I believe, and it is something that I have devoted my time heavily to convey, that art expression is an inherent property of human nature. The media may vary, but not the innate disposition.

Those that know me have heard my “talent-as-myth” diatribe all too often, and if you end up tuning in to my posts, you will encounter it soon enough. It is my goal to change the notion, which a great number of people resign to, that one needs to have “talent” to pursue the art they feel or want and am doing this on a daily basis through my program in the G+ Mentorship Program for Photographers.

With that as preface, I will probably devote a portion of my posts to inspiring artists, but I also plan to impart other conceptions that I have about life in general, with the goal of elevating, encouraging, enlivening or energizing those who read them.

Let me begin with this:

I wish for you the ability to create for yourself all that your heart desires.

Land of the Lost

Land of the Lost

#Gulluminati beware!! The Sea-IA uncovered this shot of the #SeagullSubversionSect rallying troops on a secluded island off the coast. It has been surmised that they are donning #seagullbuttsindisguise costumes and preparing for some great onslaught on all #Gullarazzi.

As of this report, however, their plan of action has not been determined and we can only issue a general warning, All #SeagullButtShooters should carry on their person's at all times the following:

  • Protective covering (plastic film for your camera and hats and long-sleeved shirts/jackets for your person … or an umbrella)

  • Wet wipes and lens cleaners

  • A female gull "in season" to release as a distraction should the troops form in earnest about your person

The latter would be an extreme action, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Including use of the following:

 • Shark-Urine® Anti-Seagull spray (fortunately for you, we sell this in the 3-pack for $69.99, plus $12.99 s/h)

"Message In A Bottle" fantasy composite by Robin Griggs Wood

"Message In A Bottle" fantasy composite by Robin Griggs Wood

Not the exact idea of this particular image, but I thought it would be fun to challenge you with the same challenge I gave my Arcanum apprentices ... to add something in the comments based on the following scenario:

You're walking along a beach. There, in near distance, sits the ubiquitous washed-ashore bottle. You're not close enough to it yet to see it clearly, but as you walk closer, your mind meanders over to the classical story of someone on a long distant island or sinking ship tossing it into the water with a message inside; a last, desperate plea for help or a note of enduring love to a faithful companion.

At last you arrive …
and find that there is, indeed, a curled piece of paper tucked inside the sealed bottle. It's a love letter, with the full name of the person to whom it's addressed and last known location.

How will you react: with action or indifference?

Don't read anyone else's until you've added your comment … ;o7

(I've got Sting singing in my head now ... ;o7)

The Butt, The Whole Butt, and Nothing Butt the Butt

The Butt, The Whole Butt, and Nothing Butt the Butt

Well … you know this had to happen eventually … O_o
I finally found a seagull that was all butt.
You all also know my penchant for photo-manipulation, butt no post-work-head-lopping was done to this image!
Now, I'm beginning to wonder if this is a stuffed prop created by the same #seagullsubversionsect that pulled the cardboard-cutout caboose-caper on me last week … hmmm.

Strengthen Your Core

Strengthen Your Core
Several years ago I decided to change my physical condition. I had gained a lot of weight over the years and confronted it one Christmas visiting my brother -- and his bathroom scale ... ugh.

I took on a program of running and weight-lifting and changed my eating. However, after a year and a half of that, I had only managed to lose about fifteen pounds. I was healthier, sure -- probably gained more muscle weight and lost some fat -- but I was still frustrated at not being able to get to where I wanted to be.

Then ... my back went out on me like a faithless lover. I felt so betrayed. It was the first time anything that debilitating had ever happened to me. I couldn't move at all.

When I went to the doctor, he told me I had to do something like yoga or pilates (similar to yoga). I laughed to myself -- the last thing that I wanted to do was bend like that!! So, I ignored him.

Throughout the following year I was still unable to to break my plateau, but during that time I did a lot of reading on the subject from professional fitness experts. One of the key points that kept coming up was the concept of 'Core Strength'. Your core is the center of your body and the primary muscle groups there are the abdominals, back, butt and hips. The minor sit-ups I had been doing just weren't addressing that fundamental core.

One day, I was walking past a pile of DVD's on sale and one particular exercise video grabbed my attention. I had remembered my doctor's words -- "pilates". "Worth a try," I thought. Well, that step changed everything! Within mere months I had lost thirty-five more pounds. My speed and agility at running increased even! I finally had gained real control and capability with my body -- for the first time in my life.

I'm sure you are now asking "Um, Robin … what does pilates have to do with photography or art?!!"

STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE.

The Internet is a vast resource of tutorials for photography and art. As well, you probably already have applications loaded onto your systems that are applicable to your current goals, or you can get some for free or at low cost. Learn them! Learn the core of your tools and those applications. It's not the plug-ins and fancy new gadgets that will be there for you when the next 'newest, latest, greatest' hits the market. What will be there for you when the 'gotta have it' fades is your ability to work with the basic fundamentals of the tools and applications you use -- and your ability to grow and adapt, when the market need fluctuates.

If you are having difficulty fully grasping how the processes work and feel you need an add-on or fancy gadget to get a quality result, remember that the fundamentals of the tools that you are using are not unknowable. Do what you need to do to learn them thoroughly. Break out a dictionary and find out what the words mean, first in your own language, and then in the language of the application or the analog operations it represents. Experiment a bit with what is in front of you. Finally learn what all the dials on your camera are for. Then, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. (Read that as, PLAY, PLAY, PLAY ... ;o))

Strengthen your core -- and watch your speed and agility soar!

An Epic Tale of an Epic #SeagullButtShot FAIL

It could happen to anyone … any #SeagullButtShooter, that is.

You see, we are trained to spot #seagullbuttsindisguise from a mile away!
However, even a WetWipe-carrying member of the #Gullarazzi has an off day.

This was mine.

Since this parrot was right next to the coast, it was perfectly logical for me to suspect that he was merely a #seagullbuttindisguise … granted, with an uncustomarily expensive costume. But, who knows, maybe the #seagullcontingent has started up a fund or something? What nefarious plots could they have cooked up to thwart our parodic antics on Saturdays?

I backed away quietly, with only this boring shot of my intended quarry's malignant mien.

sigh ...

"The Celebration Hall" a composite by Robin Griggs Wood

"The Celebration Hall" a composite by Robin Griggs Wood

The hall is ready for the big celebration. It's Google+'s birthday today––three years and I still adore this place. Dave Besbris put out the call to share "Who are your people on Plus?" Well, Dave, for one … ;o7 … but, you know, I can't stop at just three, Dave. For me Google+ has been a place of wonder and immense inspiration. Today I want to invite as honored guests to the Celebration Hall all of the folks who make G+ extra special with their wonderful imaginations, their open hearts and their generous willingness to help others to grow as well. They take imagery to a whole new level, so are well worth the add, if you haven't found them yet.

You ALL make Google+ one of the most special places to be –– including alphabetically, but not limited to:
Niki Aguirre , Miss Aniela , Annette Biggers , Sam Breach , Lotus Carroll , Gretchen Chappelle , Ron Clifford , Cheryl Cooper , Gemma Costa , Scott Detweiler , Glyn Dewis , Shantha Marie Fountain , Christopher Germano , E.E. Giorgi , Andy Gray , Brian Grzelewski , Thomas Hawk , Darla Hueske , Karen Hutton , Tommy Ingberg , Jason Jakober , Mark Johnson , Derek Kind , Alex Koloskov , Jessica Lark , Andy Lee , Jeff McDonald , Baldur McQueen , Regina Pagles , David Pairé , Sandra Parlow , Jay Patel , kimberton pemberly , Tamara Pruessner , Eric Raeber , Trey Ratcliff , Mark Rodriguez , Brooke Shaden , Alan Shapiro , Mike Shaw , Adrian Sommeling , Sairam Sundaresan , Erika Thornes , Joel Tjintjelaar , Shawn Van Daele , Catherine Vibert , Von Wong ... and many more (I'll share a circle later with a larger group). Please know that I am grateful to every one of you and am so happy to have found you here on G+ ... you rock my world!

Folks, for anyone reading this, please let me know in the comments who YOU think takes imagery to a whole other level.

[rant warning]

[rant warning]

An open letter to the folks I shared the highway with during my 400 mile journey down the coast yesterday:

To whom it may concern (and, more pointedly, to a few of those who think it doesn't concern you),

The 4-5 car length of space that I leave between my car and the car in front of me when I'm dashing down the highway at 65-70 miles per hour was created on purpose; it's not because I'm stupid, sleepy, frightened, nor ignorant. We call it "braking space". It's considered an act of sanity when moving at high speeds with others moving at high speeds so near. The space isn't there for you to zip your car into to show me how stupid, sleepy, frightened, or ignorant I'm being.

You might enjoy trying out this neat little tool that all cars come equipped with called a "turn signal". It's one of those levers you have typically sticking out on the steering column. This tool is what drivers use to communicate their intentions to one another on the road. Go out to your car right now and check it out. Neat, isn't it? I know! I think it's wonderful and amazing that cars have it, too. Next time you want to swerve into the braking space I've created in front of me, give that lever a try to let me know your intentions and I'll be more than happy to accommodate you.

While I'm at it, can we talk about the sign on a two-lane highway that reads "Slower Traffic: Keep Right" –– do you know what "Slower Traffic" means? That's basically the folks who need to drive below the posted speed limit for various safety reasons. It is not an open grant of right-of-way and entitlement for individuals who prefer to drive 15-40% above the speed limit. The sign does not give you a sanction for driving at a one-car-length distance from my rear bumper in an endeavor to "hint" at how wrong I am that I prefer to drive safely––or that I don't have the urge slow down and move over behind the trucks and trailers on the right for every person who comes up behind me trying to arrive 300 miles down the road 4 minutes before I do.

I would ask you to offer a good reason for your actions, however, as I think of all the possible answers, there isn't anything you could come up with that wouldn't sound lame or self-serving. If you really need to get past me, you can go through the gaps of the trucks and trailers on the right at your breakneck speed. That way, you'll be helping out the Highway Patrol to get a better view of you zipping past as they wait behind blinds alongside the road.

It would probably just be a good thing if you drove at the posted speed limit. It seems oppressive to your "exceptional skills" as a driver, I know. However, you should know that it has been everyone around you, braking as you veer in front them, speeding up as you nearly nick their bumper behind them and swerving out of your way in general, who have used their genuinely adept driving skills to give you the false impression that you have any real competence behind the wheel.

Here is something you may not have thought of: speed limits aren't there to rule over you. They are there to give prediction to everyone who uses this great invention, the car––which gives ease to our lives, but can also take lives, if used poorly. In fact, it is precisely this prediction which has added to your delusion that you are such a superior driver. If you couldn't predict that most other drivers were going to drive at a specific speed, you wouldn't have the opportunity to weave the fabric of your racing blue-ribbon amongst the rest of us.

Just some food for thought.

[end rant]

For everyone else on the road whom I shared my travels with: I will be oodles of thrilled to meet you on the road to adventure again. I look forward to it.

Sincerely,
Robin

How to be loved

How to be loved

Needing a bit more love in your life?

Now, you know the way things work, to get anything you're going to have to give it. If you are feeling a lack, it isn't that you aren't lovable, it is just that you need more practice!

For anything to exist in your life you need to create it. This starts with loving others more. The more you practice, the more you open yourself to the love around you and the potential to receive then grows with it.

You can practice on those around you for whom you already feel some affinity––but to earn real love, start practicing on the tougher cases around you.

Like the garbage man who picks up your trash regularly.
Like the person who cut you off on the freeway yesterday.
Like the kid who keyed your new car.
Like the homeless man who smells of sweat and urine.

Open your heart to continue to love everyone around you despite whether you feel they've earned it or not and watch the love grow in your own life. It is one of those bits of magic in this world––and it takes practice.

Celestial Pigeon Offers Sage Advice to All Seagulls

Celestial Pigeon Offers Sage Advice to All Seagulls

Be at peace, my buffoony-bird brethren.
For your karma in this life, it is foretold,
should be that of being the butt of all
banter, jokes, jests, witticisms, quips, puns, gags, wisecracks, one-liners, two-liners, funny stories, rib-ticklers, knee-slappers, punchlines, tricks, pranks, larks, stunts, hoaxes, japes, spoofs, groaners, mockery, laughter, scoffing, contempt, jeers, sneers, jibes, teasing, taunts, badinage, chaffs, sarcasm, satire, kidding, ribbing, joshing, goofing, razzing, lampoons and parodies
on Saturdays.

Live this life as it was given to you and,
if you bear it well,
in the next life you will be reincarnated

as a cat

… and no longer have to suffer having your photograph taken nor be the object of derision or scorn once a week.

Secrets From A Pro

Secrets From A Pro

Listen up, aspiring #seagullbuttshot models!
While some gulls fly and hide, other gulls are cashing in on the #seagullbutt craze and relish being placed in front of a camera (well, not their front, but you get the idea.)

Clotilde is one such clever gull, making a name for herself and becoming coast-famous for her mysterious allure. Unlike other models, Clotilde doesn't rely on tail-feather enhancement surgery or other cosmetic extremes. She's gained her distinction through her masterful poses.

Just look at the artful position of her right leg, with her toe barely gracing the rock platform. This is the consummate skill of a true professional! We think it makes for an immensely appealing image. She is so good, we cannot even quite put our wingtip on why it's so attractive!

We love this image so much, we've chosen it to be this month's cover of our magazine.

Truth Revealed

Truth Revealed
I managed to find the super-secret "Q-tip® Farms"!!
Do you ever wonder where those little ear-swab thingies you probably use most days come from?
Here, I show a snap I surreptitiously caught at the farm––while ostensibly headed to the loo "to powder my nose"––of some immature buds before they were harvested and dried.

I snagged this never-before-seen view just so, the next time you're pulling crud out of your ears, you can think on where your swabs came from and their mysterious, beautiful beginnings.

It may help to visualize on something prettier during those periodic #whattheheckISthatstuff moments … ;o7

RGW's BTS Hunt Special

RGW's BTS Hunt Special
How I got Carried Away

It was the most extreme privilege to have had this image, Carried Away, awarded 1st place honors from judges Jacob Lucas, a 2nd place from Alan Shapiro and 2 Honorable Mentions from Chris Chabot and Derek Kind in *** 2013 Summer edition in the category for Butterflies. What a thrill! … and I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity from Chrysta Rae and for the great First Friday Art Walk from Samantha Villenave to share it in … hugs to you all!

Background

I was limited to shooting most of what is in the images I created for the past Hunt with a non-dSLR (I have a Canon G12––essentially a "point & shoot"; fixed lens). It does have the capability of shooting in raw format (more information to work with) and in manual. However, almost everything I have done to create these images could be done with a "point & shoot" and Ps Elements (usually $99) or GIMP (free). I want to bring this message to some of you that may want it, there is no limit! Imagination and drive level the playing field here.

–––

How To Turn Less Into MORE

One of the aspects about smaller cameras is that they have smaller sensors than most dSLRs. To get more from a "point & shoot", you will need to take more shots, with the intention of combining them in post-processing (to get more image information when you plan on making a final image on a grander scale).

One of the liabilities of my own camera is that it is much slower than a dSLR. The only "burst" mode it has with any real speed captures tiny jpeg files not worth working with and its raw continuous speed is only about one frame per second. Since the category was "butterfly", I knew that I would have to find one dead, or come up with a better plan.

I have always been very inspired by the works of Teresa Stover (who, sadly, is not at G+ anymore). I've always wanted to create an image that I feel has the feminine and ethereal qualities that she puts in her works––with my own style, of course; I surely didn't want to copy her. The Hunt is great for pushing yourself towards new things. Recalling one of Teresa's shots for the #PhotographyDeathMatch a couple of years back––she was floating along with the wind in one of her creations depicting the Four Elements. That's when this idea started forming in my head, to be carried away by butterflies.

My little slow cam was never going to catch a real butterfly, so I hand painted one of those "nylon stretched over wire" butterflies, then shot it over 100 times at different angles to combine them in layers in Photoshop.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7gs41c0aya2FkRUEPUJWF66DY_y2WRgZEUNLnsnIPIXHs5kZPjT7bYUWIOPIfewG3yNx8z3axE8sLQ6OKS4AmhsDUFYhgRIYMmaaJIgYZtxBunLsNKI0bPLjAgB8uFfJ2TtCfcC8wN4-j/s0/Butterfly+shot_set-up_rgw_web.jpg

Here is my set-up:
I stuffed a stiff wire into the "body" of my butterfly and then stuffed the other end of the wire into a broken lamp base (yes, I keep that kind of junk around just for this type of thing. If you ever visit, you may not go into my garage … ;o7). I put the lamp base onto a cheap "lazy susan" turntable to make it easier to shoot the butterfly at multiple angles fairly quickly.

Shooting multiple images is how I get the most out of my small camera. You can see more examples of how I put this into practice in one of my earlier "making of" posts:

...as well as this post, using "focus stacking":

...and this post, stacking images to reduce noise, along with multiples for making a panoramic image:

Plan Ahead

It's important, when you are planning to separate the background from your subject for a composite, to use a plain background that is easily removed in post. High contrast (light background for a dark subject or dark background for a light subject) works well, or use color wheel opposites (for example, if your subject is full green, you can use a red background) when you want to use the channels in a compositing application to create the separation. You need to have your subject well lit, as well you need to have the background well lit avoiding shadows from your subject, which makes it quicker to select and separate. For this, I shot with a gang of inexpensive worklights (hardware store) with fluorescent bulbs and a small reading lamp for a fill light.

To get myself at the right perspective for the woman in the final image, I laid down on the top of my dresser and shot from down low. Thinking ahead for the layer separation in post and using the same technique as described above, I draped everything in black so that the white of the gown would be easier to separate.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOK5jghAJPavkGy3vfk63rq34uNaQrFD3xyJ6MB02wOPqAFhH5e-cfqVEYVwIWjpXIoDnA9V_Gj-gdYa3uGnHk-RLFTwIXJI1suYJkL3f9UQACeI4DnA2XVHrWpx8sssX1LqOrV3yRV45F/s0/Butterflies-woman-before_5391_rgw_web.jpg

Using the luminosity of the channels, Levels and the Dodge & Burn tools, I was able to retain some of the sheerness of the white fabric. (Run a search using "using channels to create masks" to learn how to do this, if you don't know how.)

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEji39lFoPAsrMHzeLQlgE6yM4e-ix5endPzPSpKJ_5yOsCDfLk8eYWdSJeAxnJAi7ut5dJII-KgioKObTatfJAxdmd2XTIQcyHFAJ5iI_7pQ6TGQCmIsKKwy69GuLxFupsgoNZUoBwcPQbk/s0/Butterflies-woman-masked_rgw_web.jpg

You can see that technique in the following image where I used it to separate a butterfly from its background. Since the butterfly is predominantly blue, the blue channel was the lightest and not the best contrast for creating a separation; the red channel was better, but the green channel had the best differentiation between light background and the butterfly. You will need to read up on Channels in Photoshop, if you have no understanding of how they work, but they are far superior for creating the most accurate selections than any of the selection tools. Sometimes a combination of Selection tools and Channels can speed the process.

It's OK To Change Your Mind

My original concept for this image was simply going to be on a white background (I was going to shoot the sheer curtains in my bedroom with the sun shining through them) however, then the super moon decided to make an appearance in our skies. I had always wanted to shoot a quality moon shot with lots of detail, so this one part of my image was not shot with my G12––I borrowed a dSLR to shoot the moon. But, that is thinking creatively, too, isn't it? … ;o) And, it was only after I had gotten some practice shooting the moon and enjoyed the results that I decided to use it as my background instead. This could still be done with a smaller camera, high detail is not always the most important thing, as long as your final concept is a solid one. However, do make sure all the elements you composite are as in-focus as you can get them with your camera. One of my practice shots (very blurry) ended up working very nicely in the composite for the glow around the moon.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1CiX05tVhEVryURKQSC8XaQipwwWXFAweiMKrjly0ZjIZH5dEQun1RaYgHz_QQkNlEaTmTOMoQbU7qX45ZsPfoytGyc7KNXaUuu6NvMk7xTijA51uf24SZ7aHMM3x9sKd5CzmlFv7RMRm/s0/

Since I already knew what my composition would be, I decided to rotate the moon shot so that the darkest part of it would be covered by the woman and butterflies and not be so prominent.
