The Path You Choose

I was reminded of this incredible woman, Ernestine Shepard, who, in her mid-seventies, became the oldest world female body-building champion. (http://goo.gl/gsv7) And she didn't start her journey of success until late in life.

For anything to exist in your life, it needs to be created.

This includes your health -- good or bad.
This includes your ability -- good or bad.
This includes your emotional reactions -- good or bad.
This includes your relationships -- good or bad.

We create the bad stuff as much as the good.

The truth is, many people don't take responsibility for what happens in their lives -- oftentimes believing that the choices they make in life are thrust upon them by "others" or circumstance. They forget that they are the ultimate cause in the forces of their own lives.

Sure, we get strapped down by mortgages, kids, medical liabilities and distressed family members. But the day that we walk out the door and say, "I, me, and only me, am going to do something about this today!" is the day where life begins.

How to be the best artist.


Ever since I can remember, I have always drawn, painted or otherwise tried to express my imagination through some form of aesthetic reality. Art has always been a part of me and always will be. It is not that art expression is something special in me, I feel that it is an intrinsic part of our humanity and that everyone has art in their nature. Wide expression takes training, but the capacity exists in everyone.

I am not a formally trained artist. When I was young and drawing, in the first attempts that we usually do -- copying the art of others or sketching the lines of photographs by eye -- I never received much in the way of feedback or support. I took that as tacit response that I was no good at it. My father “hrrumpfed” and went back to what he was doing. Art teachers in early school were overworked and passing time. I stopped focusing on that as a goal. To express the creative side of my self I went into the cosmetology business -- and got stuck there for years! In everything I did, I was always creating, however. I used to paint miniatures on clients fingernails; highly detailed works of their pets and many different things. I have painted something in most of the homes I lived in, and expressed my sensations of, and desire for color, light and form with craft and decoration. Through all of that I gained the sensibilities of art that I employ to this day. When cosmetology no longer answered my art expression needs, I decided to do murals. What the heck -- go from painting the tiniest miniatures to full scale wall murals ... why not?! I learned a lot about art while doing those murals. What constituted communication of a mood or expression, and what was merely craft. I have received my training through doing, and I hope to be training in and learning art for the rest of my life.

I do become driven when I am in the middle of a piece, but if I had to state what drives me or propels me, it would be that my most outstanding inspiration has been love. OK ... for the more pragmatic of my readers, let me qualify that as “affinity”. My creations of art, when they had any impact at all, have been borne on the back of the immense degree of affinity that I have had for the person or persons that I was creating it for. Painting for children's stories found me while I was doing murals in private homes, offered by two bright and intelligent authors that I adored.

Whether it was a mural in a child's room or creating the illustrations of a book, there was always someone that I was painting that for; someone whose delight I could imagine at the end of the work. Like making music, it has a degree less joy when there is no one singing along. You’ll know when you are creating your best artwork, because you will think less on the piece itself and more on the person or audience that will receive it in the end.

This is a painting I did for some friends who have a small school located north of Austin, in rural Texas. It is an expansive and welcoming place with a multitude of critters about and a focus on the joy and pleasure that learning can be.-----

I was talking with another Arcanum fellow yesterday who mentioned at one point, "I'm someone who sees being called 'weird' as a compliment." I laughed from a resonating viewpoint. "Me, too!!" There are days that I'll just have the quirkiest ideas (this being one of them) and must follow through.

Some will only shake their heads and say, "Robin, you're weird!" and I'll say, "Aw, golly––you're just saying that to be nice. Thanks!"

Flying Dreams

Do you ever have dreams where you are flying? I have them often, and have come to look forward to them. I have even gotten rather good at controlling my direction and speed while in the dream, so that I have some sense mastery over the dream itself. Do you have a recurring dream that you like and what is it?

This is, of course, a creative vision. The base is one of my own photographs that included the bird, trees and sky (in this particular composition already), but I added another 20% to the left side of the image and forced a color palette of my own (I also cloned out a lamp and a smaller tree at the lower right.)

We stopped by "Arch Rock" in the Valley of Fire, Nevada. I was thinking "epic arch" in my mind as we drove to it, but I was underwhelmed due to it's size. It's not that it isn't cool, I just had other ideas about it. Well, lemons and lemonade, you know ... as every element I shoot gives me new ideas for composites and an archway does make a nice frame for a winged damsel seeking a soulmate ... :o)

The menace of Cormorant Family Christmas materialized slowly as, one by one, two by two, the already distressed and petulant kinsfolk began arriving at the yearly gathering, bracing themselves for the hollow but requisite conventions of spurious exuberance, forced benignancy, overeating and the annual swapping of meaningless tokens and doodads.

Why did they do it?

Because it reminded them that at no other time of the year would life be quite this stressful.

It's been said that Los Angeles is the most photographed city in the world.
Here's one more.

(Well, with "embellishments" … ;o))

Today marks the close of a G+ photography theme icon, #LeadingLinesMonday . Created here by Pam Boling, it became one of the most popular themes on G+. I want to thank you, Pam, and the folks who have assisted in curating along the way, Michael B. Stuart David Murphy Andreas Levi Simos Xenakis and **, for keeping this awesome theme going for so long! (Sorry, no Hallowe'en themed image for me today … I needed something more epic to Grand-Finale this theme with … ;o))

"Still in the Planning Stages"

OK, here's the "how to":

1. Rent a helicopter
2. Fly really close to a large city ––> get permission first, so you don't get shot down as a suspected terrorist (a common reaction in major U.S. cities)
3. Take pictures (this is a crucial step)
4. Grab one of the shots and use it for your crazy-ass idea to create an "architectural rendering" look
5. Draw lines all over your cool city-from-above image ... that will make some folks kind of squeamish, but soldier on (remember, this is a crazy-ass idea)
6. Take individual areas of your image, for the greatest control of final look, and run them through Topaz Impressions, painting portions of each layer via a layer mask over their specific area.
7. Do #6 about 20 times, over a period of an hour

And there you have it ... :o))

No More Excuses!

The primary difference between a creative person and a non-creative one is that the creative person creates because they want to have something; they visualize what they want to have and then they keep going until they have it.

You don't become an artist by thinking, "I'm going to be an artist." It isn't about the mechanics of what goes into being an artist, it's about the mechanics of creating an end-product and not stopping until you have that end-product.

That's it. It's nothing more complex or lofty than that.

Stop lying to yourself that you aren't "creative" enough … just create something.

I'd love to see it ... ;o7
