The White Seal

The White Seal

While this is clearly a composite, a little anecdote goes with it. We stopped along the coast at a bay inaccessible by humans (who didn't have mountain goat in their lineage) that was overrun with pelicans, seagulls and seals. She was truly the only white seal amongst the crowd and alone on one rock in the middle of the water. There was one of those observation stands where you put a a couple quarters in and you could see everything through huge binoculars. It was the only place to stand that was up above the (darn) fence blocking the lenses of all the photographers there.

There was one guy standing on it when we arrived, with his long lens perched on the tourist binoculars and pointed towards this little white seal. She had her back to everyone. We stayed there quite a while, hoping to find another spot to stand above that (damn) fence and this best shooting spot hogger guy never budged from that spot.

I was about to give up and hike back up to the car and neared the observation stand. The spot hogger guy turned towards me and then climbed down indicating that I could have the spot ... mumbling irritatedly, "Good luck getting her to turn around" and hrrumpfed off.

As soon as I climbed up on the stand and pointed my long lens at her, she turned around––and kept turned around for another few minutes, just staring at me. Ha! I think I get to have the moniker of "seal whisperer" now ... ;o))). It was worth the wait; she had such a sweet face.

About the composite: when I got back home, the rocks in this shot reminded me more of something arctic, so I put the little seal in there and used a rainbow that I'd shot out of the car window on the drive, turned on it's side, for the aurora in the sky.

A big "howdy!" from the California coast.

A big "howdy!" from the California coast.
Wishing you a week of smooth sailing!

I decided to keep shooting with my long lens all last week (you never know when an opportune #seagullbutt  may present itself ... ;o7) ... so, to get the full vista, this shot was done from a panorama of about 10 images (on the vertical). No mean feat getting it all put together ... ('cuz waves move, ya know ... ;oD). At one point it was a 191 megapixel shot! The original full stitch when finished is still 12698 pixels wide. A little encouragement for those who have smaller cameras––you can still get a lot out of them, you just have to work a bit more for it ... ;o)

Another Angel Gets Her Wings
OK, not those wings! ... Laurie Rubin appropriate wings ... ;o). If you caught my post yesterday, (https://goo.gl/NnK1mu) where I explained about dragging Karen Hutton and Laurie, along with lightdancer extraordinaire Sassi Sassmannshausen out into the cold (well, it's Summer, so not that cold), dark (well, we were in the parking lot of the hotel, so not that dark) night and forced them to stand for hours (well, it was seconds really, but I'm sure they thought it was hours) while I stumbled through my set-up with the long-exposure and the PixelStick (www.thepixelstick.com/). I'd made wings for them both ... butterfly seemed to suit Laurie, nature-photog phenomenon that she is.

I admit (sheepish grin), I embellished it a "skosh" ... ;o) ... because Laurie is a magic woman and I had to make sure that her true self was on the represent here, ya know?!

Thank you so much for your patience, Laurie!
I just adore this woman ... and, I've been hanging out a lot with her of late ...

Karen Hutton, what a trooper you are! Sassi Sassmannshausen and I brought a PixelStick to the #TreyUSA  photowalk and during the after-party I asked Karen and Laurie Rubin if they would be willing to be my models for an experiment: I made wings for them both, for long exposures with the lightstick. I scuttled them outside the hotel and I told Karen, "Ok, these are your wings, especially made for you; be who you would be if you weren't confined by this universe." It didn't take her more than a heartbeat to be her full self ... Karen, the "life is light" lady ... her true self is pure light!

I did say "experiment" above, as this turned out a little blurry because, to get the wings, I made her hold that pose for 13 seconds! So, it's more of an illustration right now ... ;oD. I'll get better at this!

"Why", you may ask "not just take a shot of Karen quickly and then composite wings behind her?!" ... because ... being around 13 seconds of Karen in all her unbearable-lightenss-of-being awesomeness ... heheh, who could resist? ... ;o)
